ELK MOUNTAIN HOMESTEAD

Nestled atop the Allegheny Mountains near Benezette, the heart of Pennsylvania’s elk range, all the comforts of home take you back in time in the “Ole Homestead” atmosphere. The accommodations provide all the comforts in a pleasant atmosphere for family gatherings in the great north central mountains of Pennsylvania. Enjoy the evenings huddled around a crackling campfire and listen to elk bugle all night long! Elk Mountain Homestead is owned and operated by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The mission of the Elk Foundation is to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife and their habitat. All proceeds will be used for the benefit of elk and other wildlife.

ACCOMMODATIONS
The Homestead has 3 upstairs bedrooms, one with 4 double beds, one with 2 double beds and the master bedroom for a total of 7 double beds. Each bedroom is carpeted and decorated in the “Ole Homestead” atmosphere. A full newly remodeled bath and shower are available upstairs. Bedding linens and bath towels are provided. The kitchen is fully equipped with utensils, cooking tools, pots and pans, stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, coffee makers, assorted silverware, and table servings for the entire family and friends. Outside is a covered porch with a swing, gas barbeque grill, large fenced in lawn area and mountain-pie irons. An outdoor fire ring is provided including a generous supply of firewood. Dusk to dawn lights are provided in the parking area.
The large carpeted living room has an “Ole Homestead” stone fireplace complete with a supply of wood. A TV and VCR with a satellite dish are provided. Modern thermo-pane windows bring outdoor lighting indoors and the easy to open windows bring the fresh Allegheny Mountain air inside during those cool summer and fall evenings. Keep the windows open and listen to bulls bugle all night long!
PROPERTY
The Elk Mountain Homestead property covers 245-acres surrounded on the south and west by the 200,000-acre Elk State Forest. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation maintains the wildlife forage plots on the Homestead Property to attract elk for viewing. Elk can be viewed on the Elk Mountain Homestead property year round. Visitors to the Homestead are asked to please view elk from a safe distance; remember elk are wild animals. Remember: It is unlawful to artificially feed wildlife.
WILDLIFE
Elk are the featured wildlife on the Homestead; during the fall bull elk can be seen and heard bugling within sight and sound of the Homestead. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation maintains forage plots for elk, deer, turkey and other wildlife on the Elk Mountain Homestead Property. Elk, white-tailed deer, turkeys, grouse, hawks, eagles, coyotes, bobcats, black bear and many species of songbirds can be observed on the property. Many visitors have sat around a crackling campfire listening to elk bugling well into the night during September and October.
LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Pennsylvania's elk range is located within easy driving distances to nearby state forests and parks. The 200,000 acre Elk State Forest borders the Elk Mountain Homestead for hiking and birding as well as elk viewing. The Quehanna Wild Area provides many hiking and skiing trails as well as elk viewing sites. Check with DCNR for rules and regulations pertaining to state forests (www.dcnr.pa.us). State game lands are also nearby for hunting and wildlife viewing. Check Pennsylvania Game Commission (www.pgc.state.pa.us) for seasons and rules and regulations. The Allegheny National Forest provides walking, biking, cross-country skiing trails and canoeing.
Antique shops, golf courses, winery tours, shopping malls in St. Mary's and DuBois, local craft stores are all within short distances of the Elk Mountain Homestead. While staying with us drive the 122-mile elk scenic drive with vistas and viewing sites along the way or visit the Kinzua Bridge State Park. The scenery is beautiful along the way!
